Nasu at the foot of active volcano Mt. Chausu has many hot springs. Among them, Nasu Yumoto Onsen (Shikanoyu), Daimaru Onsen, and Sandogoya Onsen are major hot springs. It feels wonderful when you think about the long time of nature and soak in the hot water.

Famous hot springs to visit in Nasu

那須湯本温泉(鹿の湯)
The oldest hot spring in Nasu, Nasu Yumoto Onsen (Shikanoyu) Nasu Yumoto Onsen (Shikanoyu)

Spring quality: sulfur spring / Source temperature: 70–76°C
It is said that this oldest Nasu hot spring has continued since the Nara period. It is an acidic alum spring with hydrogen sulfide and arsenic. About 1300 years ago, a hunter saw a white deer with a wound enter the hot water, and people discovered the source hot spring Shikanoyu from this legend. An article about “Nasu-yu” also appears in the Shosoin documents of 738, so it is a historic hot spring.

This hot spring is on the middle slope of Mt. Chausu, and the large open-air bath made by damming a river inside the inn is famous. It is known as a bath loved by the local lord Ozeki and General Nogi, and the waterfall of hot water flowing into the outdoor bath is impressive. When you soak in the bath while feeling the mountain air, your body and mind become warm.

This hidden hot spring lies deep in the mountains, and you must cross several valleys and ridges to reach it. You can refresh your heart when you leave daily life, enjoy quiet time, and soak in the warm water.
