25. Nature’s Power

自然の猛威
Nasu is full of nature. While museums and restaurants are attractive, surveys show that hot springs and nature drives are considered its greatest appeal. Many people decide to build a vacation house because they are drawn to this natural environment. However, rich nature also means harsh conditions. Vacation life requires the mindset to accept both calm days and storms.

On August 27, 1998, Tochigi Prefecture was hit by record-breaking rainfall, causing one of the worst natural disasters since World War II. Several rivers overflowed, and the damage reminded people of the true power of nature in Nasu.

Nasu is also known for frequent lightning strikes. It is important to unplug appliances during storms, as lightning can damage antennas, electronics, and household devices.

Strong winds from typhoons can knock down trees and damage houses. Red pine trees, common in Nasu, are especially dangerous in storms.

Summers are cool and comfortable, but insects are abundant. Even well-sealed houses cannot completely prevent them.

Winter is the harshest season in Nasu, with freezing temperatures, strong winds, and heavy snowfall.

If you understand these challenges in advance, many risks can be reduced. Nasu remains a wonderful place filled with natural beauty.
