このコンテンツは2001年から2003年にかけて、私が「那須に別荘を新築してみた」ときの体験談をまとめたものです。
当時、私は会社に勤め始めて数年のペイペイでしたが、なんと別荘を新築するという大胆かつ無謀とも思える行動を実行に移したのでした。
今読み返してみても、「よくこんなことに取り組んだなー（大丈夫？）」と心配になってしまいますが、今も別荘として活用している自身を少し褒めてあげたい気持ちも抱きます。
別荘建築の始まりから終わりまで、起こったことや調べたことなどをリアルな視点でまとめています。 This content shows my experience of building a vacation house in Nasu from 2001 to 2003.
At that time, I had worked only a few years at my company.
Looking back, I still feel it was a bold and maybe reckless decision to build a vacation house.
When I read this now, I worry a little, but I also feel proud that I still use the house today.
I describe what happened and what I learned, from the start of planning to the end of construction.

別荘をどう位置づけるかは、人それぞれのライフスタイルや価値観によって変わります。 The role of a vacation house depends on each person’s lifestyle and values.

「持ち家」か「賃貸」か。
それは働いている時間を除く人生の大半の時間を過ごすことになる「住む場所」をどう定めるかについての良く聞く議論ですが、私は敢えてそこに「別荘」という第三の選択肢を加えることを提案したいです。
「暮らすように過ごす」ことができる別荘は、人生の時間を過ごす第三の選択肢として十分に考える余地のある、魅力的な選択肢です。
最近注目されているテレワークや二拠点生活（デュアルライフ）にもピッタリです。 People often talk about whether it is better to own or rent a home.
This is a question about where we live for most of our time outside work.
I would like to add a third choice: having a vacation house.
A vacation house where you can live like at home is an attractive option.
It can be a third place where you spend part of your life.
It also fits very well with remote work and a dual-base lifestyle.

そしてもし別荘を持つなら（私自身の経験から）、可能な限り「早い方が良い」と断言できます。
人生には様々なシーンがあります。

それによって、楽しめる期間の長さが違ってきます。 From my own experience, I can say this: if you want a vacation house, it is better to get it as early as possible.
Life has many stages: childhood, early working years, starting a family, raising children, and old age.
The best timing for a vacation house depends on which stage you choose.
The earlier you start, the longer you can enjoy it.

なるべく早い時期に別荘を持てば、普段の目まぐるしい日常から開放されてほっとできる「心の拠り所」として大きな存在となりますし、長い期間をかけてエッセンシャル（必要不可欠）なものとしての別荘ライフを楽しむことができます。
ただし、人生経験の少ない若いうちに別荘を持とうとすると、海千山千の不動産業者や建築業者とのやりとりで、都合よく扱われてしまうことも起こり得ますので、注意が必要です。 If you get a vacation house early, it can become an emotional base where you can relax away from busy daily life.
You can enjoy this essential part of your life for many years.
However, if you are still young, you must be careful when dealing with real-estate and building companies. Some may try to use your lack of experience.

若くて人生経験が不足していても、それは知識を得ることでカバーできますので、このサイトで基本的な知識を入手して、納得のいく別荘を手に入れていただければ嬉しいです。

なお蛇足ですが、一部の富裕層は、この3つの選択肢を得るのに自分の資金を使わずに、親の世代から子の世代へ相続という形で受け継ぐことが行われています。
「家や別荘って、親から貰うものなんじゃない？」と当たり前に考える、とても恵まれた環境にある方も一定数いらっしゃるのです（家や別荘を自分で購入しなければ手元に現金が残り、余裕のある生活ができるのは当たり前ですよね...）。
子どもがいる方は、自分の世代で少し苦労してでも家や別荘を入手しておくことで「次世代に渡すことができる、次世代がお金に苦心せず心豊かに暮らせる贈り物」となります。 As a side note, some wealthy people receive houses or vacation houses from their parents through inheritance, without using their own money.
For them, it is natural to think, “A house or vacation house is something you get from your parents.”
If you have children, a house or vacation house that you obtain, even with some effort, can become a gift to the next generation.
It can help them live with less financial stress and with a richer heart.

別荘建築は「正解のない問い」に向き合う実践の場でもあります。 Building a vacation house is also practice for facing questions without fixed answers.

最後に、一つ重要なことをお伝えするとすれば、それは何事においても自分で考えて自分で行動する意識が大切ということです。
学校教育を例にとれば、かつては教科書をもとに教師が解き方を教え、それを生徒が覚えて問題を解き、ただ一つの正解に辿り着くことが良い教育と捉えられていました。
しかし最近では、アクティブ・ラーニング（生きる力を身につけるための教育）が重要という考え方に変化しています。 Last, I want to share one important message.
It is important to think for yourself and act by yourself in any situation.
In the past, school education focused on learning one correct answer from a teacher.
Now, active learning, which builds the power to live, is seen as more important.

予測不可能な自然災害やパンデミックなど、これまでになかった未知の課題に直面し、「いかにして生き残るか」、「生き残るための力を育てる」ことの重要性が認識されたためです。
そして「定められた正解のない問い」に向き合っていける教養（リベラルアーツ）を身に付けて、常識にとらわれず、ものごとを多角的に見ていく訓練が必要と言われています。
別荘建築は、それらの力を身につけるには、まさにピッタリな実践訓練です。
手順書が用意されていないなかで、次々に適切な選択を迫られる、そんな体験ができます。 We now face new problems such as natural disasters and pandemics that we could not predict.
People understand that we must learn how to survive and build strength to live.
To face questions without fixed answers, we need broad education and liberal arts.
We must train ourselves to see things from many angles, not only from common ideas.
Building a vacation house is very good practical training for these skills.
There is no manual, and you must keep making suitable choices one after another.

私が体験し判断したことが絶対的な正解ではありません。
むしろ「自分ならこうする」というオリジナルな考え方で、他の誰かが考えたものではない、この世界で一つだけの「自分にとっての正解」を導き出していただけたなら、これほど嬉しいことはありません。 My own choices are not the only correct answers.
I hope you will think, “This is how I would do it,” and make your own plan.
Please find your own right answer, which exists only for you in this world.

自分なりの「美意識」に照らして、納得のいく選択を積み重ねていきたいものです。 I want to keep making choices that match my own sense of beauty and values.

別荘建築には費用も時間もかかりますし、まして、それらを無制限に使えるという訳でもありません。
ある程度の制約がある中で、「ベストと思えるもの」を選ぶ作業の繰り返しとなります（人生における様々な選択と同じですね）。
そんな中で、すべてにおいて「これでいいや」ではなく「これがいい」と、真剣に考えて選択していけるかどうか。
自分なりの美意識に照らして判断し、クオリティの高い意思決定をしていけるかどうか。
自分自身を試すつもりで挑戦してみるのも面白いのではないかと考えます。 Building a vacation house needs both money and time, and these are not unlimited.
You must keep choosing what seems best under some limits. This is similar to many choices in life.
Instead of saying, “This is good enough,” please aim for, “This is what I truly want,” after careful thought.
Try to decide based on your own sense of beauty and values and make high-quality decisions.
I think it can be interesting to try this project as a way to test yourself.

人は日々、選択しながら生きています。
Y字路で右に進むか左に進むかを選ぶように、その瞬間には「ふたつにひとつしかない選択」と、選択した結果の因果が、その後の自分の人生に繋がっています（たまに、上手く事が運ばないことを他人のせいにする人を見かけますが、すべて自身の選択の結果なのです）。
自分にとっての良い選択ができるようになるには、懸命に考えるトレーニングが必要です。
そのトレーニングに、別荘建築のような体験は最適なのではないかと考えます。 We all live by making choices every day.
Like choosing right or left at a fork in the road, each choice and its result lead to our later life.
Sometimes people blame others when things go badly, but the result usually comes from our own past choices.
To make better choices, we need training to think hard.
I believe that building a vacation house is very good training for this.
