地元では通称「光丸山（こうまるさん）」と呼ばれ、親しまれているそうです。 Local people call this temple “Komarusan,” and they have cherished it for a long time.

およそ1,000年前に慈覚大師が開基したと伝えられる由緒あるお寺です。 People say the monk Jikaku Daishi founded this historic temple about 1,000 years ago.

特に、この大天狗面は、高さ2.14m、幅1.5m、鼻の高さ1.3m、重さ1tと、木製の天狗面では日本一といわれています。 The giant Tengu mask is 2.14 m tall, 1.5 m wide, and its nose is 1.3 m long. It weighs about 1 ton and is said to be the largest wooden Tengu mask in Japan.

そして、もう一つの見どころは境内を出て右手の石坂を登ったところにあります。 Another sight is up the stone slope on the right after you leave the main temple grounds.

天然の松が造り出すバーゴラが素敵です。 Pine trees form a natural pergola and make a pleasant walkway.

西行桜を中心に、まるでカレンダーの中の風景のような日本庭園があります。
ちなみに西行桜という名は、西行法師が奥州行脚の折り法輪寺に詣でて、境内にあったしだれ桜を見て
「盛りにはなどか若葉は今とても心ひかるる糸桜かな」と詠んだと伝えられることからついたそうです。 The Japanese garden is centered on the Saigyo Zakura cherry tree.
People say the name Saigyo Zakura comes from the poet monk Saigyo. He visited Horin-ji during his travels in the Tohoku region and wrote a poem about a weeping cherry tree here.

周辺には屋号が掲げられた町並みがあったり、水の中に鳥居があったりして、
昔から「光丸山」が大変人々に親しみ深いお寺であったことが分かります。
なかがわ水遊園からもすぐそこなので、ぜひ立ち寄ってみたいお寺ですね。 The surrounding streets have traditional shop nameplates, and there is also a torii gate in the water.
These things show that people have loved “Komarusan” for many years.
It is very close to Nakagawa Aquatic Park, so we recommend a short visit.
