People say the monk Jikaku Daishi founded it about 1,000 years ago.
The temple has many sights. They include a 2.14 meter Tengu mask and the Saigyo Zakura cherry tree linked to the poet Saigyo.

The giant Tengu mask is 2.14 m tall, 1.5 m wide, and its nose is 1.3 m long. It weighs about 1 ton and is said to be the largest wooden Tengu mask in Japan.

Another sight is up the stone slope on the right after you leave the main temple grounds.

Pine trees form a natural pergola and make a pleasant walkway.

The Japanese garden is centered on the Saigyo Zakura cherry tree.
People say the name Saigyo Zakura comes from the poet monk Saigyo. He visited Horin-ji during his travels in the Tohoku region and wrote a poem about a weeping cherry tree here.
