在来工法0
“Zairai-kōhō” is Japan’s traditional wooden construction method, also known as the post-and-beam (timber frame) method. It uses joinery such as mortise-and-tenon to connect columns and beams, allowing flexible design—ideal for a custom-built vacation house. Kaori’s house is also built with this method.

▼ What is Traditional post-and-beam method?

Zairai-kōhō is Japan’s traditional wooden building style, also called the post-and-beam method. Columns and beams are joined with traditional joinery (such as mortise-and-tenon), so the frame can flex and absorb earthquakes. It also offers great freedom in layout and design. ... If you’re building a fully custom vacation house, this method is highly recommended. Of course, Kaori’s house uses it too.

In large cities, however, labor costs are high, so this method has declined. Skilled craftsmen have been pushed out and many have shifted into office jobs. ... With a solid structure, a house lasts a long time, and even if parts wear out in the future, you can renovate in many ways with relatively small costs.

Why can craftsmen continue working with this method in Nasu? The key is the difference in labor costs and prices between metropolitan areas and Nasu. ... In fact, in big cities there may already be too few craftsmen left—so it might be difficult to build a truly authentic house no matter how much money you spend.

For post-and-beam construction, properly dried lumber is best. “Dried lumber” means wood dried from around 30% moisture content down to about 15%. ... In Kaori’s house, all columns use dried lumber, except for the decorative beam in the living room’s open ceiling. That beam is left as green wood so that, as it dries and develops twists or small cracks, it gains a natural character.

The weight and texture are completely different between dried lumber and green wood. Dried lumber is incredibly light!

Only the decorative beam used in the living room’s open ceiling is green wood with beautiful grain and knots. Kaori is excited to see how it changes as it dries.
