Tamamo Inari Shrine

玉藻稲荷神社1
For my first shrine visit of the year, I visit Tamamo Inari Shrine, a rare shrine that enshrines Tamamo-no-Mae, the nine-tailed fox.
The quiet approach and Kagami-no-Ike pond from the legend create a calm and mysterious mood.

玉藻稲荷神社1

I came here for my first shrine visit of the year.
It was the Year of the Dog, so I chose Tamamo Inari Shrine. This shrine is linked to the story of “Inu-ōmono,” a horseback archery training where warriors used dogs' tails as fox tails to prepare to defeat Tamamo-no-Mae, the nine-tailed fox.

I walk along the quiet approach to the shrine.
Even though it is New Year, the area is very silent, and I feel a sacred atmosphere.

The slightly leaning torii gate also adds to the special feeling of the place.

On the right side of the main hall, there is Kagami-no-Ike, the Mirror Pond.
According to legend, Tamamo-no-Mae turned into a cicada and sat on a cherry tree, but people saw her real fox form reflected in this pond and found out the truth.

The nine-tailed fox is originally said to be a “zuijū,” an auspicious beast and leader of all animals. Its appearance is a sign of peace and a wise ruler.
I prayed that this year would also be a peaceful year.

(Kaori’s Highlights)

Because this shrine is related to the nine-tailed fox legend, the grounds feel both still and slightly tense.
The quiet path and the calm surface of Kagami-no-Ike made me feel like I had stepped into a story.
If you like history and legends, I especially recommend this shrine.
