After you leave your car in the parking lot, walk towards Numappara Marshland.
In about 10 minutes on foot, you will reach the open wetland area.

沼ッ原湿原2

When I visited in early spring, some snow still remained on the ground.
Please watch your step as you walk.

沼ッ原湿原3

The clear air makes the Nasu mountain range stand out beautifully.
You will feel very refreshed.
The vegetation looks very different from usual forests, so the scenery feels like a “lost world”.

沼ッ原湿原4

In the water, we saw many egg clusters of black salamanders.
The water is very clear and looks icy cold.

沼ッ原湿原5

We also saw skunk cabbages, called “zazen-sou” in Japanese because they resemble a monk sitting in meditation.

沼ッ原湿原6

There are two wooden boardwalks side by side, so families with children can walk safely hand in hand.
You can really enjoy the feeling of being close to nature here.

(Kaori’s Highlights)

Numappara Marshland can be crowded in the warm seasons, so it is best to visit before noon.
Please take your time and enjoy a slow walk.
In each season you can see different plants: skunk cabbage (late April–late May), Japanese azalea (mid–late June), daylilies (mid June–mid July), false hellebores (early June–late July), and autumn colors (late September–mid October).
The marshland that suddenly appears in front of you is a very impressive view.
It is a place you will want to visit at least once.
