Relax in bubbly water with a “phew”—many people think, “Even if a hot spring is impossible, at least I want a jet bath.” Kaori felt the same at first.

31. Jet bath

ジェットバス
Many people want a jet bath in a vacation house. Kaori did too, and it was even included in the initial design estimate. But after researching jet baths, she realized they are not something to install casually. Her conclusion: unless you are extremely enthusiastic about bath time, unfazed by some risk, and confident you can keep up with daily maintenance, it is better not to install one. Kaori herself canceled the plan.

In a nationwide morning newspaper dated January 11, 2001, twenty jet-bath companies jointly published an urgent notice. It warned of two points and announced a free replacement for older intake covers.

The first fatal accident occurred in August 1992 in Fukuoka City with an INAX jet bath. Manufacturers began selling improved intake covers with many holes from the following year, but replacement did not progress. In 2000, two fatal accidents occurred with Noritz jet baths in Tokyo and Fukushima, leading to the urgent notice. In all three cases, elementary-school girls drowned after their hair was sucked in. It was later found that jet-bath accidents since October 1990 totaled more than 30 cases, becoming a serious social issue. Although manufacturers offered free intake-cover replacements, only about 20,000 purchasers were identified out of 130,000 units shipped, so the situation was difficult to address in practice. Imagining a visiting child relative drowning makes a jet bath too frightening for Kaori to install.

Jet baths can blow air bubbles or provide massage functions, but the pump vibrates and the blower can be quite noisy in the bathroom. People who install them often use them at first, but usage tends to decrease over time. When you do use one, you generally need to wash the filtration unit and clean the filter at least once a week. For someone like Kaori who dislikes routine maintenance, it is not suitable. With so many “convenient” devices today, perhaps the best choice is still the traditional bathing style.
