64. Handmade Lighting

“Let’s make a lamp using an ostrich egg,” Mr. Tsuburaya suddenly suggested one day.
Kaori, a bird lover, was immediately on board. He had recently seen a newly built place that used an ostrich-egg lamp, and that seems to have sparked his competitive spirit. With growing excitement, he took Kaori to see the real thing at a newly built clinic.

“See? Isn’t it interesting?” Mr. Tsuburaya said, admiring the ostrich-egg lamp hanging in the corridor by the reception desk.
Kaori loved its unique texture and warm glow. Once lit, subtle patterns on the shell appeared, as if something might hatch at any moment.

Making such a lamp turned out to be harder than expected: drilling holes in the tough shell, boiling it to remove the inner membrane, then fitting a bulb and suspending it with wire. Handmade lighting has a warmth that industrial products can’t easily replicate—something Mr. Tsuburaya reflected on while looking at the finished “Kaori House” version of the ostrich-egg lamp.

From different angles, the egg’s shape feels different, and the bulb seen through the opening looks like a yolk. Perhaps the image of Kaori House was an egg—an ancient symbol of life that Kaori came to adore.
